way to the summit continued, 1.8.01

Now the storm to the summit has begun. Yesterday afternoon, Olaf and three Spanish friends started towards camp 1. They were accompanied by two members of the Belgian expedition. Despite it was dark, the latter had the opinion to go without a rope in the deeply snowed glacier with its dangerous crevesses! Jospi, the leader of the Spanish expedition asked them urgently to join their roped party. But these ignorant boys had not any rope with them! By the way, it is the same expedition that already lost one member. At a rest, it happened. One of the Belgians fell into a crevesse like in slow motion. He was saved in the last second by our team. Thereafter, the Belgians asked subduedly to join the German-Spanish roped party.

It was a excerting work to get to camp 1 because all ways were in deep snow. Therefore, the group needed much longer then in previous ascents. When arriving the camp 1, the tents had to be freed from snow and the night was short, because Olaf, Jospi, Jordy and Antonito wanted to continue climbing at 3 a.m. next morning. At the same time, the alarm clock ended the dreams of Max and Christian in the base camp. But they progressed faster on their skis! The tents in camp 2 were snowed up until the top of the roof. So, Olaf and the Spanish guys had to shovel snow before they could have a tea. And they were that exhausted that they could not think about continuing to camp 3 tomorrow.

Max and Christian got rather easily to camp 1 and had some food and drinks there. Ralf and Lydia start to camp 1 now.

Lydia Schubert, 1.8. still (!) in the base camp.
