Ankunft im Basislager, 7.7.01

6th. Trekking stage Concordia-Shagrin 6.7.2001

When the sun rose, we saw the spectacular panarama of the surrounding mountains at the Concordia place under clear blue sky. The first part led us over the Upper Baltoro Glacier and was not really trying. Chogolisa, Gasherbrum IV, Baltoro Kangri, Mitre Peak and the peaks around the Vigne-Glacier were in our sight, but most impressing was the Muztagh Tower.

At noon, it can become in 5000m altitude estonishing hot when the sun shines. Therefore, we used the opportunity to take a bath in an icecold glacier lake. It is a funny situation to lie between ice-floes in the water and see 7000 and 8000 meter high mountains all around. Under the hot sun, one is warm and dry after some seconds...

We arrived at our camp near Shagrin in the early afternoon, were we built up our tents. Christian continued the way directly to the base camp, that is only 2 hours away from Shagrin. He wanted to secure the best places for our tents.

7th. Trekking stage Shagrin - Gasherbrum Basecamp 7.7.01

After two hours walking we arrived at the base camp at best weather. Christian has already chosen a nice area where we built up our tents. The whole morning was filled with sorting the equipment and paying of porters. In the afternoon we sorted our food and the upper-camp-equipment. In the evening, we will have a party with the Spanish group: With our 'Dresdner Christstollen' and Spanish ham and red wine we celebrate Pepe's 38th. birthday...
